SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL PEDIATRIC SIMULATION!

June 2011

Dear Colleague:

Welcome to International Pediatric Simulation!

Welcome to IPSS!

It is with great pleasure that we inform you that on Friday April 8, 2011, in Florence, Italy, the International Pediatric Simulation Society (IPSS, www.ipedsim.org) was signed into Law. The half-day event was witnessed by members and officiated by notary.

Simulation applied to pediatrics is undergoing rapid growth as evidenced by wide expansion of programs on a global scale, mounting literature, simulation research consortiums, and the steady growth of meetings devoted entirely to the subspecialty (IPSSW). Causes of this ready adoption are likely several fold and related to unique aspects of pediatric/perinatal medicine including:

  • Need to practice to proficiency to minimize harm to children and infants
  • Need to achieve an optimal volume-outcome relationship in the setting of high acuity yet relatively low frequency events (e.g. pediatric cardiopulmonary failure)
  • Need to mitigate the variable of time and chance inherent in pediatric training (e.g. seasonality of exposures and disease processes)
  • Need to overcome training limitations due to work hour restrictions as well as societal expectations of senior level involvement
  • Need to train amidst the unique patient-clinician-parent triad (e.g. family centered care)

With these in mind, IPSS promotes and supports multi-disciplinary simulation-based education, training and research among all subspecialties focused on the unique nature and needs of caring for the pediatric and perinatal patient and family.

IPSS will be the official organization of the International Pediatric Simulation Symposia and Workshops (IPSSW) currently representing the world’s largest gathering of pediatric simulation specialist. In its fourth year, the IPSSW2011’s “walk around the world” will be held in beautiful Toulouse France. The meeting will highlight internationally renowned speakers including new IPSS initiatives such as delivery of simulation-based education to third world countries.

Launching fully Summer 2011, www.ipedsim.org, will be the first website devoted entirely to an international pediatric simulation users group and will be a central resource, providing a wide range of unique offerings to membership.

Membership. The IPSS Founding Board cordially invites you to join with colleagues from around the world as an inaugural IPSS Society Member. As discussed in Madrid IPSSW2010, to celebrate, for a limited time (July 5 - July 29, 2011), membership fees for IPSS will be waived (with voluntary contributions) as part of your IPSSW2010 Madrid Registration.
